Lawrence in hot water over Corby claims

Renae Lawrence could be denied a chance to have her sentence reduced after she was secretly caught on video alleging that her former cellmate, Schapelle Corby, knowingly smuggled marijuana into Indonesia.

In the vision broadcast on Network Ten on Monday, Lawrence, a member of the Bali Nine drug traffickers, says Corby had confided in her that she knew there was marijuana in her surfing gear when she was arrested in 2004.

Speaking to someone off camera, Lawrence said Corby had done it three times before and admitted she “played crazy” to get the public’s sympathy, and to win sentence reductions.

Ten reported Lawrence didn’t know she was being videoed at the time, but didn’t deny making the comments when asked later.

Sunar Agus, head of corrections at Bali’s justice office, says he has seen the vision and will investigate the circumstances.

“What we will look into is how Renae could have that interview within the prison compound, including whether she received payment or not,” he said.

“It’s a disciplinary violation to not ask permission and its impact could be that she does not get her remission.”

Mr Agus said it was not within his jurisdiction to examine the claims about Corby, whose parole is being reviewed in light of an interview given by her sister, Mercedes.

In the Seven Network interview, she maintained her 36-year-old sister was innocent and said the marijuana “could have been from Indonesia”. Authorities are yet to determine whether that interview breached parole conditions by upsetting the community.

The Corbys have also denied the new allegations, saying they are “extremely hurtful”.

If Lawrence is punished, it will not be the first time.

The 36-year-old was moved from Kerobokan jail to another prison in Bali in October, accused of conspiring with another inmate to murder two female prison guards.

But she was transferred to a less isolated jail last month due to good behaviour.

A spokeswoman for Network Ten told media news website Mumbrella that it paid a small fee to an agency, not to Lawrence, for the interview.
